My Story “A Little Expensive” is on Word Riot
It began with a postcard-sized flyer. In large Arial font, it read: Do you want to be a writer? Do you have a story you’re dying to tell? Then join the Montclair Writing Workshop located in the heart of vibrant downtown Montclair. The back: a black and white photo of the alumni of the program. They were huddled together as if arranged for a yearbook photo — tallest in the back, shortest, kneeling in the front. They were white men and women, grinning in a manner that was both scary and inviting. Half of them wore glasses — large, plastic frames that loomed over their faces like planets, or smaller cat-like frames that cut just beneath their eyebrows. I squinted at the picture. It seemed to me that they were in someone’s bedroom. What appeared to be a bed loomed on the far right; a nightstand, and clothes hung across a curtain rod. Large italics across the bottom of the picture read: Learn from the best. Be the best.
